It is hard to believe some of the stories related here happened in the "Land of the Free"--but, unfortunately, they did. The Chapters are pot-boilers. A sample chapter ("Some Call it Murder--A Case of J. Edgar's Paranoia) starts off with a cop listening to wiretaps, only to discover that a prominent politician's wife has killed their daughter. A setup ensue. "Everything in this book is true and provable, except my opinions," Waxman claims. Interesting stuff.

White water rafting down the Arkansas River can put you in an eddy, difficult to extract yourself. I got involved in a business enterprise, where two investors sued me for fraud in civil court. No problem. Then came the pressure of a grievance filed before the Colorado Supreme Court and a criminal indictment that I learned about from the newspaper. The headline read Lawyer accused of fraud and forgery. Two friends were willing to handle the case for $38,000, more than the cost of law school. Another experienced friend would take the case for a retainer of $8500. When the trial date arrived, I found myself with right on my side and an unprepared attorney. It was a test of the legal system. If I were acquitted, it passed; if not, it failed miserably.

Early in his young adult life, Vern Miller recognized that laws provide the fabric of society; he wanted to be a part of it. As a boy he aspired to be a warrior, and now as an elder statesman in the field of justice, he’s still a champion for the underdog. In this inspirational memoir, author Mike Danford tells the story of a unique lawman whose escapades and charisma are now legend in the state of Kansas. With more than fifty years in law enforcement, Vern Miller rewrote the book on justice and public service: pursuing criminals with the same gusto he pursued order, social fairness, and public service. Vern Miller: Legendary Kansas Lawman narrates the life of this one-of-a-kind man—from his school days at Wichita North High School, to his U.S. Army service in Korea, to his three decades of public service work with two stints as Attorney General, and his twenty-five years practicing law. Filled with photographs, this is a memorable portrait of a rare American and a true hero of the law. Vern Miller: Legendary Kansas Lawman emphasizes Vern’s fascination with the rules and demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement officers everywhere to upholding the law.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas served on the Court for 36 years. He wrote more opinions and more dissents than any other Justice. Douglas was described as an invigorating presence on the Court and possessed unusual stamina, an unyielding will, and enormous courage. Douglas's achievements on and off the Court were astonishing. He was an adventurer, jurist, and environmentalist, whose writings and actions impacted the country for many years. He was also a hiker and climber. He organized hikes and other actions to protect the C&O Canal near Washington, D.C., Olympic Beach and Glacier Peak in Washington State, the Buffalo River in Arkansas, and areas along the Appalachian Trail. He was a prophet, visionary, pioneer, scout, and pathfinder. In reading The Footpaths of Justice William O. Douglas: A Legacy of Place, one accepts Douglas's invitation to hike with him, to visit a place with him and to "join him in a process of discovery and affirmation that is available to a free people in a spacious land."

While most people will never be charged with a serious crime, either you or someone you know has appeared in a Municipal Court. Municipal Court is usually a city court that handles traffic tickets, lots of traffic tickets, and ordinance violations such as accumulation of trash, and neighbor issues such as trespass and barking dogs. Fines are imposed on the guilty. Those who work there refer to it as “Muni Court.” This court should not be confused with the television courtroom shows where two people ask a judge to resolve an issue that usually requires payment of money to one or the other of the participants, those are small claims courts. The patrons of Municipal Court are ordinary citizens who usually appear without the benefit of an attorney and provide their own defense in a forum with which they are not familiar. A few do very well in their own defense. Most simply want to get the matter behind them. But some provide a fascinating display of human ingenuity, ineptness, self rationalization and much unintended humor. Muni Court shares a few of author Bluth’s experiences as a muni court judge in two rural communities.
