The story of Tunxis Community College is emblematic of the changes seen in higher education in America since the 1960s. Created in 1970, the college is part of the public college system of Connecticut. Its 30-year history is filled with all the successes and pitfalls of any evolving, open-admission institution. Here is not only the factual history but, as well, a collection of "voices" from the people who fashioned a vibrant campus during the last three decades-the students, faculty and staff. Their story is one more example of the new democracy of higher education in America at the end of the twentieth century.

For some time now, we have been inundated with a steady stream of books and articles detailing the problems plaguing public education. Edutopia goes beyond the criticisms to offer a comprehensive list of proposed reforms addressing the problems. The general thrust of these proposals is to de-regulate education, removing elements of compulsion, and giving students and parents the freedom to make meaningful choices with regard to the nature of their educational experiences. The reforms proposed in Edutopia go well beyond quick fixes and fresh coats of paint, to offer parents and students meaningful alternatives to the present system of public education in America.

This book is a critical examination of the failure of the current foreign-language teaching model in the United States, based primarily on the author's first-hand experience as a language learner and teacher, and secondarily on interdisciplinary research. The target audience includes virtually anyone interested in the teaching or learning of foreign languages. The need for this book has never been greater. Virtually every day we see on TV, in magazines, on the Internet, or even in academia, ads for quick and easy foreign language proficiency. This false advertising serves only to mask our linguistic incompetence and interferes with much needed progress in the struggle for increasing foreign language acquisition.

The western tradition of education is rooted in the concept of the "Liberal Arts." What are they, and what role does the Liberal Arts concept play in the past and future of our society? In what ways has the Liberal Arts tradition been eroded by trendy educational fashions? How is the Liberal Arts tradition threatened by forces—social, educational, and religious—that oppose this ideal? What is the unique calling and mission of the denominational, church-related Liberal Arts college? Richard Terrell, a professor Art for 39 years at Doane College, Crete, Nebraska, addresses these issues from the perspective of his teaching in liberal arts colleges for 44 years, in which he taught courses in studio art and the history of art as well as interdisciplinary studies. A frequent panelist on issues of free expression, the arts, and issues of religion in society, Terrell offers a concerned critique of contemporary trends in higher education and a firm affirmation of the integrity of the historic vision of education rooted in the Liberal Arts ideal.

Mr. Shen was born in China and has lived and taught in the United States for 17 years. Mr. Shen has published three books in China. He is also a contributing writer for many Chinese newspapers and magazines around the world. This book is an account of author's own experience teaching in American schools and observations as a teacher and a parent. The cause of the failure of American education is not the schools. The adult-oriented society and the anti-eductaion culture surrounding the schools have been destroying the American education and American children. If they really want to reform their education, Americans must understand that American way that they know is not the only way in the world. American way that has been hurting American education is certainly not the right way. America needs some fresh eyes and views from the different perspectives. That is what this book to offer.

In the Eyes of God takes a hard look at what is being done to improve public education in America. The twenty-first century finds the United States in a very demanding situation regarding the economy, world affairs, and the general demise of humanity. The education of children in America seems to be the one topic that is getting some attention. With documentaries like The Lottery and Waiting for Superman, the general public is finally beginning to understand the current state of education in the country—a state of which most educators have long been aware. There is a real lack of leadership in education today and a real fear of doing anything outside the norm in terms of how students learn. The poor selection and retention of talent in the classroom has taken a toll on the ability of schools to educate their students effectively. In the Eyes of God challenges the fact that only a small percentage of the school day to used to educate children. It also examines cultural profi ciency and the need for educators to go beyond just cultural awareness and become more competent and profi cient teachers. Most importantly, we must strive to see that no children fall through the cracks of the system and that every child receives the best education possible.

By Dennis W. Redovich
The Big Con in Education is the shocking exposé that details how public schools are used as convenient scapegoats for social and economic woes-woes perpetuated not in schoolyards, but in the halls of Congress and in the boardrooms of the Fortune 500. Author Dennis W. Redovich debunks leading business and political interests who blame economic problems on an inadequate workforce, claiming that schools are not educating children with the life skills needed in the twenty-first century. Using the United States government's own statistics, The Big Con in Education uncovers the lies trumpeted in the media about the serious shortage of "skilled workers" and the subsequent economic decline. It also illustrates a lack of credible rationale to claim that all students need to take higher-level courses in academic subjects to prepare to enter the workforce. Redovich contends that supply-side education and training does not produce high-paying jobs any more than does failed supply-side economics. The Big Con in Education documents the hype, propaganda, and hypocrisy big business and political propagandists dish out in a war against public education. Redovich offers his views on the important facts concerning the reality of the job situation that faces the country.
