Public education, once considered a dogmatic institution in the 20th century, now finds itself challenged at almost every level in today’s sociopolitical environment. New realities, as evidenced by the political complexities of the ‘global village’, widespread technological advances that undermine established educational practices, and ever mounting pressures on the curriculum to appease corporate interests have altered the face of public education forever, leaving educator’s seemingly stranded in the middle of a pedagogical minefield without a map or compass to get out. This book is written to help educational leaders who want to make a difference. Each chapter is devoted to the sociopolitical realities being faced by educators who are not only in leadership positions, but also those who are either aspiring to be in leadership positions, or those who have had leadership thrust upon them. In every case, this book will help to clarify the issues and challenges that every good leader must face. At the end of each chapter you will find carefully constructed questions that will help guide you or your study group through a process of discussion of the presented concepts. We know when you finish working through this book that your leadership and that of your team will function fully informed and capable of addressing the needs of the 21st century school.

SCHOOLWISE is a parent's guide from first grade through high school. As a parent and former teacher I know parents who speak up and work together can learn to deal with school problems. Among parents you'll meet in SCHOOLWISE are those who got rid of an incompetent teacher, though the principal did nothing; and other parents who persuaded their school to discard ineffective reading and math programs and adopt programs proven to help children succeed.

"Brown, a former teacher, offers a common-sense approach for seeing that children get the best from any school system A book full of 'sure to get results' advice."

Institutional and professorial integrity were the hallmarks of the greatest intellectual institution of our time, the American university. Both forms of integrity are now under daily attack by forces more concerned with the business aspects of a university. Sports programs have become more important than academic rigor. Universities are unique social institutions with the two responsibilities: 1) teaching adults how to think and reason in a variety of disciplines with the goal of becoming a functioning problem solver and 2) to create the next generation of knowledge makers. In the great universities, these responsibilities are accomplished by active researcher/teachers organized around intellectual guilds called departments. Administrators are drawn from faculty who are well-established scholars. In the past two decades, this structure has been under attack by those who view a university as a business. Faculty have become employees. Under the business model, the very essence of a university as a place to explore all sides of an idea has been gradually replaced with a corporate uneasiness with controversy of any kind. The result of changing from the collegial model to the business model has been a “dumbing down” of academic programs and an ever increasing number of breaches of integrity. A theory for the renewal of institutional integrity is advanced and its implementation discussed within a university setting.

An impossible job? That's what many have called the superintendency. With its growing and completing demands, it is a profession that can baffle even the most knowledgeable and well prepared. Public education resources have become more limited. There are new national and state testing requirements. Social issues are pulled into the schools and want more control over their operation. Add in politics and bureaucracy, and the end result is quite an unmanageable scenario.

Unfortunately, more superintendents seem to be leaving the profession. Whether it is because of the demands superintendents face, the quality of preparation programs or a combination of both, the trend is a growing concern. Many superintendents are unprepared to deal with what they may encounter in running a school district.

Yet the office is not all doom and gloom. Offering opportunities that are unavailable in many other careers, the superintendency is a position in which you will be taken seriously by others. And it is a profession in which one person, through skilled leadership, can make a difference by getting everyone to pull together and create a better environment for students. Surveys actually have shown that most superintendents would become superintendents again if they had the chance.

A personal account of one teacher’s journey through the labyrinth that is urban public education. While claiming to need teachers meeting the highest of intellectual and professional standards, the educational bureaucracy really demands bureaucrats who execute decisions, not professionals who make decisions. The teacher whose life is at the center of this book, turns, surprisingly, to her union to reclaim what she believes to be the legacy of her profession. Thus, begins a parallel journey into the inner workings of the teachers’ union movement. She finds another contradiction as compelling as the first: Does the teachers’ union represent "workers" or "professionals?” Is it to focus strictly on bread and butter issues or are professional issues also its concern--even its obligation? Written by someone who knows both the school system and the union from the inside out, this book asks the tough questions, explodes the erroneous myths, and exposes the conflicting contradictions in public education and in its union movement. Most of all, however, it describes the enormous stakes that await the decision that the teachers themselves have to make. It comes down to one critical question: Are they “workers” or are they “professionals?” [author bio]Deborah Lynch Walsh is a Chicago Public School teacher, an activist in the Chicago Teachers Union, and an advocate for teacher empowerment and education reform. She holds bachelor and master’s degrees in education, and a Ph. D. in educational policy analysis. Walsh has worked in schools and unions for 25 years.
