This book relates some of our experiences during 30 years as foster parents. The reality of what these children endured before and after placement in the foster care system is heartbreaking. After all these years, my husband Ron and I cling stubbornly to our belief that time and man can change, but God and truth will not. My goal is to inform the public, about the foster care system. I hope to sound the alarm loud and clear, that the current foster care system is not working. I want to bring attention to the powerless children, within the system, being tossed about in the waves of loophole laws, uninformed policy makers, non-committed decision-makers, and non-motivated and often disinterested birth parents. Court mandated and enforced accountability must take place at all levels involved!

"So this is what I believe: when we were unborn souls, some of us were recruited A certain number of men and women were needed at this time in history to make a point to the world about the inevitability of loving one another in myriad ways. The mission and the challenge appealed to me." The Love that Shouted for Joy! is a series of vignettes, scattered in space and time, about the complications that arise when two people decide to marry. The fact that the partners are of the same sex is only one piece of the intricate landscape that spans over 30 years and tells a story culminating in a backyard ceremony during the historic summer of 2004. For anyone who has ever dealt with in-laws, planned or is contemplating a wedding, has had to come to terms with a painful change of heart to trust and love again, you may recognize yourself. Voodoo Dolls, My Romance with the Dirt, Wisconsin Trumps Bali and Virginia Woolf's House are four of the 22 chapters that describe the journey of one couple daring to speak the name of love the first summer after Massachusetts announced the "legitimacy" of same-sex unions.

Where do I belong? Barbara Gowan sought to answer this question as she searched for the real meaning of family. The product of an interracial relationship in the 1960s, she lived in foster care before her adoption by loving-and complex-parents. In this candid account, she faces her long-standing inner conflicts with race, religion, and identity as she searches for her birth parents and her life's purpose. Gowan's emotional and inspirational story deals with overcoming abuse, loss, codependency, and rejection. She demonstrates how important the multifaceted concepts of faith, family, and love are in all human relationships, and how they form our sense of self. She shares not only her personal insights and revelations but also concrete strategies from other adoptees and respected professionals. The result is a compelling narrative that will educate and support members of the adoption and multicultural community. Gowan's deeply personal Christian testimonial provides an honest perspective on these often-challenging conflicts. "It's powerful and gripping storytelling! Barbara Gowan gives readers a stimulating point of view on adoption and multicultural family relationships." -Thomas Brooks, author of A Wealth of Family: An Adopted Son's International Quest for Heritage, Reunion and Enrichment

By Merry Corbin
Eat, Drink & Be Merry is an entertaining and poignant memoir that begins with a curly-haired little girl whose life turned tragically upside down when she was five years old. Merry humorously and joyfully recounts stumbling into womanhood and taking on marriage, motherhood, and the classroom. An offspring of rural Iowa in the fifties, she learned to dance even when life didn't throw her a party. Readers can sense her innate passion for family and friends, but especially for kids. Merry's story is intended to be a legacy for her GRANDkids, but booklovers struggling with their own survival can elicit a couple of lessons (and recipes, too) from this gutsy risk-taker whose fate became her fortune.
