A father's identity and love for his teenaged daughter are both tested in this tale of emotional struggles. Samantha's life is slowly but surely eroding as she is unable to control her self-destructive behaviors. Her parents, Jack and Elizabeth, are doing everything they can to help but are unable to halt the girl's downward spiral that continues to gain momentum. They come to accept that unless drastic steps are taken, they may lose their child forever. Based on the author's true life experiences, the uneven, twisted road to Samantha's recovery leads from a well-to-do suburb in Westchester County to a wilderness program in New Hampshire and culminates with her stay at a therapeutic boarding school in upstate New York. Desperate to save his daughter, Jack knows he must find a way to face his fears and resolve his own issues. As the program helps Samantha to painfully dig deeper toward discovering her true self, Jack also begins to absorb its teachings. In doing so, he gains a greater understanding of who his daughter really is and, ultimately, of himself.

Currently, kids are being hyper-sexualized by the exploding provocativeness in the media. Parents can develop the skills to recognize these subtle influences and the knowledge to counteract and do something about it. In The Sexualization of America's Kids, Mr. Wright draws on his 22 years as a therapist, working with over 1,000 kids and their families, to demonstrate how this provocativeness affects our kids. He uses their stories to discuss how kids fall prey to these negative presentations, and he recommends Seven Ways to Raise Sexually Healthy Children and Teenagers. Mr. Wright's use of dialogued role-plays and actual case examples shows parents when and how to appropriately communicate on sexual issues with their different aged kids. This book is designed to answer some of the questions you may be asking deep inside yourself. You may not have even put certain questions into words, but just have a longing to find a solution to whatever is bothering you. If you are a young woman, you or your friends have probably battled with one or more of these issues: suicidal thoughts, depression, relationship struggles, eating disorders or health problems. Although this is a wide-range of subjects, I believe the answers to these challenges all lie in the same fundamental truths. You can discover these truths for yourself by observing your own experience and by beginning to understand the thoughts of enlightened men and women, such as Einstein, Jesus, the Dalai Lama, Buddha and other great teachers. Much of their guidance, I feel, will point you in this one direction—the purpose of your life is to know your own inner Self. You will be amazed to find that the closer you come to understanding how to do this, the closer you will come to being free from whatever problems weigh you down. It sounds so simple, and in way, it is.
