In 1908, an enormous explosion occurs over Siberia, leveling thousands of hectares of forest land. Seventeen years later, Dr. Miroslav Oborski,a politically unpopular Russian physicist, has collected evidence that suggests there is far more to the explosion than commonly believed. He unwittingly enlists the help of a criminal organization headed by the Barkov brothers to find a powerful and technically advanced object that survived the explosion.

Unknown to Dr. Oborski, the Barkovs have another agenda. Financed by a group of paranoid and corrupt government officials, they have been ordered to dispose of the troublesome Dr. Oborski and secure the valuable object. But the Barkovs, no strangers to greed and corruption themselves, have a different plan in mind.

It’s up to the National Science and Development Foundation and its chairman, Viktor Treschev, to save Dr. Oborski and find the object before the Barkovs get to it. The situation rapidly becomes complicated when a Russian farm family, a reclusive hunter, and Norman MacLeod, a Canadian Merchant Marine seaman, are reluctantly drawn into the deadly, high-stakes game that crisscrosses Russia and finds its way into eastern Canada in a race to find a device that could change history forever.

“A crackling good story told in the compelling, precise prose of a poet. Imaginative. Evocative. Wander the streets of New York with Edgar Allan Poe, who, dear reader, must solve a murder to save a friend. The Frankfurt eBook Grand Prize in Fiction goes to E.M. Schorb for Paradise Square...”

—Award Citation, Walter Anderson, Chairman, Parade Publications

“By mixing elements of the historical novel and the conventional mystery with a speculative reconstruction of Poe’s final days, Schorb has crafted a fascinating tale. He does great honor to Poe’s memory and fame.”

—Gregory Harris, BookPage.com

“A modern blend of literary history and spunky humor that deserves its Frankfurt nod.”

After a world wind of sinister seduction, dark temptation, and shame, Alina Baca has gone missing amongst a backdrop of similar disappearances in Castlegrove, a diminutive divot within Abilene Texas not often minded. Possibly of her own free will.

Alternately, it’s possible Alina has succumb to a depravity brewing in the underbelly of the shrouded community for ages, previously feared by the young theology graduate student to be evil itself beckoning her from the shadows. Drawing her beneath the veil of reason.

Now with her whereabouts unknown Alina’s loved ones are left to decipher whether she’s inevitably lost her struggle with sanity, bringing harm to herself. Could some haunting, malevolent force have captured the town’s newest resident for its own, or was she simply a deeply disturbed young lady? There are those who think not. And then there are those who know better!

Michael Kintner is on the run. As the sole survivor of the bombing of the Sistine Chapel where the pope and hundreds of others were killed during a disastrous war between Islam and Christianity, Kintner is already plagued with radiation sickness. Now he is being sought for the destruction of the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the murder of tens of thousands of civilians. While Kintner stealthily moves across the desert, he knows that if he does not continue to outsmart his enemies, he will surely die.

The intelligence organizations of France and the United States, along with the conservative Muslim group, the Wahabi, all want, for their own reasons, to apprehend and execute Kintner. But he is not the archetypical war criminal—Kintner is a Jesuit priest and the head of a new Catholic military order. As he desperately attempts to start a new life with the help of his new friend, eighteen-year-old Maggie Morales, Kintner is not afraid of being caught by his pursuers—but instead by something else more terrible by far.

In this political thriller, a heroic priest must fight for his beliefs—and his life—amid the aftermath of a bloody struggle between a newly-formed Catholic order and the terrorists of the world.
