Doctor Theodore “Teddy” Thyme is one of the best in his field. He finds his professional work both industrious and enjoyable. Raine Justice Liverboardman will prove to be the ultimate challenge of Dr. Thyme’s entire career. Raine has been charged with attempted capital murder. Dr. Thyme is the psychiatrist chosen to examine Raine to determine if Raine is fit for trial.

The case itself is hazy at best. No body had been discovered; yet Raine confessed to the murder. When Dr. Thyme meets Raine, he finds a person infected by evil and genius in equal quantities. He questions Raine’s family members and finds a history of bizarre, ghastly, and probably abusive people. Which may explain the murderous behavior of his patient.

However, as the case goes to trial Dr. Thyme wonders if Raine is up to something more macabre. Some sort of sick joke, of sorts. Raine is certainly intelligent enough to undermine the United States judicial system. Yet there is a full confession from Raine on record. Haunted by Raine, Dr. Thyme might soon discover that the proximity to madness has severe consequences.

Back from the war in Afghanistan that included a stay at Walter Reed hospital, Daniel Newcomb is hitchhiking across the United States on his way home to Alaska when he takes a detour in mountainous Oregon in search for work. After he is dropped off at Multnomah Falls, Dan has no idea of the challenges that lie ahead for him in the coming months.

After he agrees to what he thinks will be a mundane housesitting job at a remote cabin for the winter, it is not long before unexpected events transform the nature of his job. Even as he battles foul weather, a persistent family of dogs, and two-legged intruders, Dan finds time to learn to fly a small plane. Months later as his stint in Oregon ends and Daniel finally returns to Alaska with an adopted puppy in tow, he begins a new chapter that includes long-awaited reunions, love, and fulfilling his dream of becoming a bush pilot.

Detour in Oregon is the compelling tale of an Afghanistan War veteran’s journey home from the battlefields to Alaska as unlikely encounters and powerful emotions play an important part in shaping his future.

By Elvin C. Bell

Senator Robert F. “Bobby” Kennedy had just lost the 1968 presidential primary election in Oregon to Senator Eugene McCarthy when Elvin Bell, Fresno, California’s Mayor Pro Tem, hosted him for a breakfast meeting. As an exhausted Kennedy approached the podium to speak, Bell watched in amazement as Kennedy transformed from a frail man into a powerful speaker. Moments later as Bell rose to his feet with other audience members in a rousing standing ovation, he had no idea that he would never see his friend Bobby again. Bobby was shot the next day in Los Angeles and died within hours.

Bell, a retired public official and USAF colonel, shares a compelling compilation of anecdotes that highlight the iconic personalities he has known and worked with during his assignments in the White House and the Pentagon, as well as during official foreign travels and various activities throughout America. In addition to the everyday characters and scoundrels he has encountered in his lifetime, he features nearly eighty personalities that include Gregory Peck, John Wayne, John Lennon, Eleanor Roosevelt, General Alexander Haig, Frank Sinatra, and Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan.

In this fascinating memoir, a former political figure takes a look back at the true-life characters he has encountered and how they made a difference in his life and the world.
