This work evolved out of a love for my ancestors, one being John Whitelaw, the Covenanter Monkland Martyr, who was executed for his religious beliefs in Edinburgh, 1683. While searching for his records I came across reference to thousands of other Scottish Covenanters. This Index lists those Covenanters found in some books written about the period between 1630 and 1712.There are many, many more Covenanters, whose names need to be added to this work, and, God willing, I will do it. The Covenanters were steadfast in their Presbyterian beliefs and refused to take an oath unto the King stating that he was the head of the church. They believed that Christ was the Head of the Church and their loyalty to this belief allowed them to lay their lives down for it. The Royalists and Dragoons, who were seeking to bring them into obedience to the King, relentlessly chased the Covenanters from glen to glen. This disregard for their civil rights was brutally carried out basically in the Lowlands of Scotland. Many of their records were destroyed along with their lives and their stories only live in family lore and books that were written about them. I have extracted some of their names and created The Scottish Covenanter Genealogical Index, which is by no means complete, but is a work in progress.

This book tells the story of what it is like growing up in a Commune, traveling the world and living life in a different way. Through the eyes of child and then later as boy we move into this new reality in a rich individual writing style. From zen to the military it’s all in there. Read about it, that’s the only way! “Fantastic”-say people who have read it! “You must publish this!” say others, beaming with passion. “There is something to learn from this man” explain some. Find out what it is like in Central Asia after the Berlin wall came down and how the Trance Music scene has had to move from Goa to all over the world! This is a gift to the world!

The Book You MUST Read to Understand JIHAD and America's Challenge in the Middle East Murray S. Fradin, B.A., M.A., an historian and Middle East Specialist, has drawn upon his research to bring out a new edition of Jihad: The Mahdi Rebllion in the Sudan. In it he hopes to show uncanny parallels between this century-old war and the events occurring today in the Middle East-including the rise of radical Islamic movements and the Iraqi crisis. It is Mr. Fradin's thesis that long-standing differences in the Middle East can eventually be replaced by more powerful democratic forces at the birth of the 21st century. Are these the questions you want answers to? - Why is the Arab world turning against Europe and the United States?
- How are the forces of religion, politics, and culture being twisted to suit the aspirations of would-be tyrants and dictators?
- Why do "messianic" leaders preaching jihad or "holy war" hold center stage today?
- Is America ahead or behind the curve in Middle East politics?
- Is the Iraqi conflict only about oil?
If you would like answers to all or any of these questions, then you must read JIHAD: The Mahdi Rebellion in the Sudan. The Yom Kippur War was a seminal event in the history of the Middle East and a defining moment in the Anglo-American relationship. This thesis-originally presented at the University of Cambridge in 2005-draws upon recently declassified documents from the United Kingdom and the United States to offer a fresh interpretation of the crisis and the consequent transatlantic strain. It assesses the strategies of both governments toward the war and evaluates the conventional wisdom that the conflict precipitated a major schism between London and Washington. This thesis shows that, while Britain and America came to loggerheads often during the war, their disputes were subtle and complex. Above all, they were rooted in the two nations' differing levels of national power, capability, and tolerance for risk. By closely examining the details of their disagreements, this work throws light on a critical crisis in post-war international history and on the British-American relationship that continues to resonate in world politics to this day.

Missing from the abundant literature on the history of British East Africa had been an evaluation of the British medical administration and its relation to the conduct of East African colonial governments. Beck's account of the modernization and development of scientific health services in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika during the first half of the twentieth century not only filled that void, it also provided additional insight into the political, social, economic, and cultural aspects of the colonies. Included in her study of this complex system of colonial medical services are discussions of the changing and conflicting objectives of the colonial personnel, other influences on medical policy such as tribal traditions and varieties of climates within the region, disease control, and public health education of the Africans. She also considers the impact of World War I on the medical administration and presents her general observations on medical services in developing countries.

Always leave a story better than you found it, or as Spedding once said: “When a thing is asserted as a fact, always ask who first reported it, and what means he had of knowing the truth.” Taking this quotation under advisement allowed us to create this work, leaving some space on how old Ministers used to look upon suspicion as good evidence or even considering Sir William Cecil’s saying that “it was as necessary that treason should exist, as that the nation should be preserved”. But why this was so evident in those times was because when men stepped into some position of Office, they retired from general society and confined themselves to a limited circle, no longer acknowledging the free observations of their acquaintances or looking at objects at first hand, but as through a secondary telescope. A ‘personal collision with mankind’ ceased for them as they turned implicitly to their secretaries and clerks. Hence raised a multitude of mistakes that was the frequent cause why men, who had been very good politicians out of Office, had made so sorry a figure in Office. And many are the persons who could do nothing whatever without a plot. They could hardly hang their hats upon a peg. They would even organize a plan for two years, which shall have no other importance but to dine with the squire of a neighbouring parish. It was such concepts of life that made all cunning persons superficial ones: there was never one exception, though there were short cuts taken, as for example when Henry VIII., had declared Elizabeth I., illegitimate and an Act passed the two Houses to that effect. When that Queen came to the throne, it was taken into consideration to repeal that Act, but “No!” said Sir Nicholas Bacon, ‘the Crown takes away all defects. Such is the old law and we will act upon it. It is wise to close a festered wound.” According to Bacon’s maxim, whoever acquired a Crown, no matter by what means, had a right to it.
