For decades Ethel Davis Hopper, known by everyone around town as a poison-dripper and a control freak, collected what she considered to be valuable collectibles and antiques. Recently deceased, this self-appointed matriarch in the family forced her house and contents upon her favorite granddaughter, a minister's wife who lives in London--Rachel and James Campbell. The young couple with their two small children have arrived for a month of vacation which has always begun with Ethel's family reunion. But this year things are very different. Ethel dies and the Campbells become only too aware of just how expense this property will be to keep. The put the house on the market at a time when properties are not selling well and decide to auction off the contents--a house filled by pack-rat Ethel. They hire a local auctioneer upon the advice of a few local people--and soon regret having done so. In addition, Rachel's divorced parents arrive unannounced, both alcoholics. One has a long-held secret that will be revealed--adding more anxiety to an already distraught Rachel. And as if that is not enough, a distant relative becomes enraged about the sale and threatens legal action. It is a wet, cold summer in Vermont--and one that readers will long remember as they settle in at a country auction.

Suburbia...a place where you can finally unwind from all the chaos and cacophony of city life. That’s what author Sharon Radcliff hoped to find when she moved with her family out of the city and into the suburbs of New Jersey. Yes, life was certainly more relaxed and slower-paced, but pretty soon she discovered a whole new culture that existed in suburbia that she had to quickly adjust to. From the playdates to the Mommy and Me’s, from carpooling and minivans to lawn envy and birthday wars, Sharon will take you on an unforgettable journey on which she will show you an insider’s view of what it feels like to be a city girl who makes that big move out to the “burbs.”

Fun with Stuff is a collection of humor columns, many of which first appeared in a Southern California Mensa publication. But don’t be frightened; they’re not all that intellectual. Hardly. Instead, these are true life stories and exaggerated fabrications that everyone can relate to. Laugh along as Bruce Smith relates tales detailing: - A comedy of errors as Bruce and his wife make an attempt to travel in an RV.
- The origins of the saying, “your hair looks like a cat sucked on it.”
- How you simply can’t trust the drink sizes at fast food restaurants.
- How the phone company wrongly accused the author of calling porn numbers in Africa.
- A workshop where anyone (well, almost anyone) can learn to write a joke.
Enjoy these and other classic columns, regaled by people who wish to remain anonymous as “hilarious,” “mind-bogglingly funny,” as well as “disorienting and bizarre.” “What are laughing at?” people will ask you. “Fun with Stuff,” you’ll answer. “Bruce Smith is a comedy genius. You should buy it. Really. I’m not kidding. Like right now.”

By Jerry Zezima
It is the best of times, it is the worst of times. Yes, Jerry Zezima swiped that from Dickens, but Dickens is dead and he can’t sue. Besides, it perfectly describes the life of a baby boomer who also happens to be a husband and father. In “Leave It to Boomer,” Jerry Zezima describes in hilarious detail his life in a household where he is surrounded by women (one wife, two daughters, various animals) and why, as a result, he is the very model of the modern middle-age man. “Leave It to Boomer” is the first book by popular and widely published humorist Jerry Zezima, who sees the lighter side of life and expresses it in a way that readers, especially middle-age parents, can identify with. A lot of people, especially baby boomers, women as well as men, can relate to Jerry Zezima. His unique brand of good-natured, self-deprecating humor makes readers see themselves in funny situations and laugh at the absurdities of modern living.

My family and most of my friends will accept my departure from this earth. But I don’t really know what to do about some of my friends in the Writers’ Circle. Even if they see the death certificate, there are some of them who just don’t trust me. In fact, there is one member who did not believe it when I was hospitalized. I’d had major surgery for Pete’s sake, but when I came back, he swore that he’d seen me alongside the I-5 freeway in an orange jumpsuit picking up trash. I am sure he will look around at each meeting for weeks after my funeral, clearly expecting to see me walk in saying, “Gotcha!” Excerpt from “Whom Would You Pick to Deliver Your Eulogy?” by Vivian Charlton
