When a movie production entourage invades Chris Landrum’s close-knit South Carolina island community, he is among the first in an excited crowd who gather to watch the filming. Unfortunately, it is not long before tragedy strikes and the film’s director drowns while on a fishing expedition. But when one of Chris’s friends barely escapes death in an accident on the set one day, Chris becomes convinced the accident is no accident at all.

As fear replaces anticipation on Folly Beach, Chris and his close friend Charles—a self-anointed private detective—embark on an investigation. They get to know members of the movie’s entourage and soon suspect one of the actors might be playing more than the role of a killer. Immersed in determining why the movie set is plagued with accidents as well as dealing with their own personal problems, Chris and Charles are just as surprised as everyone else when a fisherman catches the one he wishes had gotten away—the corpse of one of the movie’s stars.

Now Chris must face what could be the final minutes of his life when he learns that nothing is what it appears to be in the magical world of the movies.

By Nathaniel Northington

Seven days after Nate Northington was born, in October 1947, the NAACP made an appeal to the world on racism before the United Nations.

As Nate grew up within an ever-changing and often volatile world plagued by bigotry and hatred, even he could not have predicted what would happen twenty years later.

Destined to play football from an early age, Nate matured into a talented player whose good grades and competitive spirit quickly caught the eye of college recruiters. As he chronicles his journey from high school to his experience as the first black to sign an athletic scholarship at the University of Kentucky, Nate shares a glimpse into how he and other African American football players fought on the gridiron throughout the civil rights movement to achieve success both on and off the field. Every moment would lead up to the crucial period in American sports history when, after the sudden death of Greg Page—Nate’s close friend and teammate—he would break through the barriers of racism and become the first black to play football in the SEC.

Still Running is a story not only about the game of football and integration but also about one man who was inspired to keep running, find grace through God’s love, and ultimately become a sports pioneer.

“I admire greatly the way in which Deacon Sciolino has been able to absorb a vast amount of material and weave it into a coherent account of the R. C. Church vis-à-vis the Holocaust. … Telling the story ‘from the inside’ has an especial relevance and importance.” —Rev. Hubert G. Locke, cofounder of the Annual Scholars’ Conference on the Holocaust and the Churches The image of Jews as “God-killers” and their refusal to convert to Christianity has fueled a long tradition of Christian intolerance, hatred, and violence. It is no surprise, then, that when Adolf Hitler advocated the elimination of Jews, he found willing allies within the Catholic Church and Christianity itself. In this study, author Anthony J. Sciolino, himself a Catholic, cuts into the heart of why the Catholic Church and Christianity as a whole failed to stop the Holocaust. He demonstrates that Nazism’s racial anti-Semitism was rooted in Christian anti-Judaism. While tens of thousands of Christians risked their lives to save Jews, many more—including some members of the hierarchy—aided Hitler’s campaign with their silence or their participation. Sciolino’s solid research and comprehensive interpretation provide a cogent and powerful analysis of Christian doctrine and church history to help answer the question of what went wrong. He suggests that Christian tradition and teaching systematically excluded Jews from “the circle of Christian concern” and thus led to the tragedy of the Holocaust. From the origins of anti-Judaism and anti-Semitism and the controversial position of Pope Pius XII to the Catholic Church’s current endeavors to hold itself accountable for their role, The Holocaust, the Church, and the Law of Unintended Consequences offers a vital examination of one of history’s most disturbing issues. theholocaustandchurch.com

By George Molho

In 1978, seven-year-old George Molho was kidnapped by his own father. For a year, he survived mental and physical abuse to the point of torture. He found it easier to get used to hell than to hope that heaven was around the corner. George eventually escaped, but surviving the aftermath proved to be much more difficult.

This memoir weaves past and present together to connect the pieces of Molho’s childhood and adult life that shaped the man he would become. It explores the adage, “love conquers all,” revealing the inner workings that we all seek to understand. George was lucky to learn how to love from his family before his abduction, before his father’s cruel version of love was inflicted upon his young body and psyche. Later in life, love compels him to divulge all that happened on the mountainside where he left his innocence as a boy.

It’s not about how hard we get hit; it’s about how much we can take and keep moving forward. Scarred is a memoir written by a survivor, intended to empower and embolden all who have suffered, have survived, and are ready to be set free.

“This will be known as the book that set the literary genre of memoir free. Scarred reads like fiction while shattering the facade of make believe … Molho becomes the victor of his past and his triumph is contagious.”

—Andrea Afra, Free Press Houston
