When the battle to protect the ancient trees heats up, sides are chosen and lines are crossed. When difficulties disrupt plans, some people are willing to do just about anything to prove their points, even if exploiting the legendary Bigfoot compromises their beliefs and ideals.

Indicator species like the spotted owl and the marbled murrelet have proven to be an exceptional tool in regulating timber harvest along California's North Coast. But for an elite group of environmental activists, it just wasn't enough.

While a group of Bigfoot researchers probe the wilderness to prove the creature existence, others use the legend to protect thousands of privately owned forests'. Backed by media attention and public support, things run smoothly until something goes terribly wrong. The outcome takes the issues into the wilderness, one of the largest remaining continuous groves of ancient trees, and into a place where neither party ever expected to go.

Could the legendary Bigfoot exist among the ancient redwoods and rugged terrain of California s Eel River Valley? Little is known of the Sinkyone people who once called those majestic forests their home. With their passing went their knowledge of their mythical legends, sacred location and unspoken areas to be left alone, lost forever or were they?

Generations of park rangers have sworn to protect one of the largest remaining groves of ancient coast redwoods. Since the park dedication, there has been at least one Bigfoot related report a year. For the most part, they were never taken very serious, written off as misidentified wildlife, or an over active imagination brought on by the aura of an ancient forest and even a self fulfilling prophecy for those who really want to believe.

For one skeptical ranger, they were nothing more than entertaining folklore and myths. That all changed one-day after a series of Bigfoot related reports were brought to his attention. During his search for answers, he discovered that there was more to the redwoods then he ever imagined and found himself down a path that would forever change his way of thinking.

On a crisp autumn day two centuries ago, a barefoot, bent old man hurries along a country lane in New England carrying an old pair of shoes stuffed with wild apples. Concealed in his coat and pants pockets, in his shirt and under his shapeless hat are many other treasures he has discovered that bright fall day, treasures nature leaves for all to find-if one has the eyes and the heart to see and value them. The Apple Gatherer has both. Living simply, he has uncovered the deepest secrets of the woods and has learned to live in harmony and contentment with nature.

"Farmers think all the harvest is in the fields," the Apple Gatherer tells the young narrator of this gentle tale of awakening to the glories of the natural world, "but that ain't the half of it. The woods, son. There's riches there in every season." And to prove it, he pulls from his pockets, shirt, and hat a dazzling array of such riches. In the end the young narrator gains a new appreciation not only of nature but of the passage of time.

An ideal introduction to the wonders of nature that so captivated the author of Walden, Henry David Thoreau, The Apple Gatherer will leave its young readers awestruck by the splendor and mystery that exist all around them.
