Anna awoke slowly, she lay staring upward into the gray light that flooded in from above, trying to remember where she was. "Chuy." He was still asleep. Anna lay there silently while the gray light whitened the summit. She sat upright, waiting for Chuy to wake up. In a minute she spotted something protruding out of the dry silt in a corner. she leaned over and raked her fingers through the silt and uncovered a turquoise and silver bracelet. She reached over and shook Chuy gently. "What! what?" he said groggily. "Chuy, wake up. Look what I found!" In her excitement to show him the bracelet, the lapels of her blouse fell apart exposing her full, pert roundness. Chuy stared in surprise, "Uh…!" She stopped suddenly, her eyes smiling at him. "Oh, did you just now discover that I'm a woman?" "Yes! I mean, no! er, I mean…" …Anna's effect on him was wholly extraordinary. There was her beauty, her innocence, which could not fail to attract his maturity. It was as though she, herself, were unreal; as though every moment he spent with her was part of some wonderful dream. Yet, "Could she really like me—a half-breed," he thought to himself.

What was it like to be a Mexican American youth growing up in a small copper mining town in Arizona? This collection of short stories written in the voices of those young people answers that question. It will not only captivate readers who are young adults but also those adults who are young at heart. Who can resist characters like Emilio and Gigante, who live on the fringe of Morenci social culture because they are different? Emilio was disfigured in a fire that killed his family and stunted his mental and physical growth and Gigante is so big that his job is to carry coffins from the church to the cemetery. In the title story, Margarita and Carmelita discover that maybe water can come from the moon. These and other intriguing characters in this collection are individuals whose lives are in transition and the stories are about how they deal with the changes. At the core of the stories is the knowledge that the town will eventually be destroyed by the ever expanding copper mine that provides most of the employment in the area. The author, Elena Díaz Björkquist gives us a wonderful insight into life in a mining town.

I loved it! I read the whole thing in under 3 hours! My favorite part was when Heather was feeding Sugar the medicine, and it had to be mixed with apple sauce. I loved the story. The plot was awesome! The way you described everything helped me picture it in my head. The part about Heather and the girl who hit the deer was sad, but I liked it. I also loved how at the end you said the air was crisp and smelled of apples. I could so imagine being there! —Jewel Forman, age 12 I found myself laughing out loud while reading this wonderful book! I believe any young girl will be able to find a kinship with Heather on some level. Thank you for bringing back memories that will now forever be in print for so many to enjoy! —Rosalie Myron, stable owner As a book about the last year of high school for a teenager in a single-parent family with many responsibilities to shoulder, “Heather” is a link to a life in rural Maine filled with friends, family members, and horses to love and care for. As an expert on the public health issues of children and adults, I value “Heather” as a book that is wholesome, informative, and fun for young readers. —Connie van Eeghen, Dr.PH.
