A short story is a form of art from the heart, the mind, and the imagination. These stories represent the thoughts and creativity of thirty-nine members of Cold Spring Harbor High School's class of 2010. While we attempted to categorize and classify our stories, for simple organizational purposes, the truth is that each story is unique and represents some facet of the individuality of the author. Each turn of the page will reveal a new identity and a different personality, exactly as a short story should.

When Jeremy McGinnis, a 15-year-old in the sleepy Gold Rush town of Murphys, discovers a retired teacher spasming with an asthma attack and out of medicine, it's a no-brainer to get him to the hospital. But the local media suddenly turns Jeremy into a hero, his second "fifteen minutes of fame". As he gets to know the teacher, Lester Crump, a man who has invested his life savings in three breeding Vietnamese miniature potbellied pigs and a trailer, he raises Andy Warhol's comment into an intense and engaging study of personal integrity.

Outside of town Eliza Hewlie, a 65-year-old widow brokering the sale of an abandoned gold mine just upstream from Lester, has to contend with the threat of the deal contaminating the town's groundwater. As Jeremy and Lester design a project which becomes a huge environmental scavenger hunt, involving dozens of high school students and half their parents, the tale of a town galvanized into action is told in alternating chapters by Jeremy and Eliza. In parallel coming-of-age stories, both begin feeling frustrated and trapped at the opening of the story but free and in control of their lives at the end for the first time. "*****THE EXECUTION IS THOUROUGHLY ENTERTAINING. People are never what they are made out to be. 'The Extraordinary Pupfish of Calaveras County' is a story with two unique view points. One follows Jeremy McGinnis, a fifteen-year-old whose reputation is overblown as a hero when he helps an old man suffering from an asthma attack. The other follows Eliza Hewlie, a sixty-five-year-old faced with a decision that could wreak havoc on the town's environment. 'The Extraordinary Pupfish of Calaveras County' seems unusual in set up, but the execution is thoroughly entertaining, leading it to a recommendation." Midwest Book Review, Oregon, WI

In The Winter Stranger: The Wishing Well Sequel, the residents of Jasper, Virginia, unite to protect the children of the orphanage, and return some sense of safety to their town.

Timothy left, as the sun was coming up, heading for the orphanage, as instructed by the stranger.

He followed the route given to him by the stranger, staying off the main road. Within an hour and a half, Timothy came upon the location where he was instructed to stop and wait. He tied his horse to a tree, deep in the woods, so it could not be seen from the road and walked back to the road.

He removed the bullets from his pistol and cautiously tossed the pistol onto the road, near the middle, so it could be seen. He walked back and hid beside the road, in a cluster of trees and large boulders.

It wasn't long before he heard a rider coming. As the rider approached, Timothy recognized him-it was Scott Hennigan.

As Scott followed the road to the orphanage, he noticed an object shining in the road just ahead and slowed his horse to a walk. As he neared the object, he saw it was a pistol.

Annie thought for a second. "I know a place," she said with a shrug. "I'll take you there."

Isolated and unsure of their purpose in life, three adolescents begin to realize that the entire world is just as mundane as the suburbia they're running away from. And while being surrounded by nothing but boredom and superficiality seems bad enough, they soon learn that a dormant life is not that much worse than all of humanity in general. Two Stories About Nothing Significant is just that-two separate accounts of mediocrity and superficiality in a not-so-average light. Through the seemingly insignificant conflicts and let-downs, the characters begin to dissect their own insecurity in order to understand just where they're all going and what they have to do to get there.

In the very early morning hours what appears to be a purple automobile streaks down Plainview's main street. A brief glimpse of it is shown on the evening TV news, but what it is and where it came from is a mystery. Angie Inkster Scrivener decides to solve the mystery so she can use it as her news story entry in a contest sponsored by a nearby metropolitan newspaper. If Angie's story is select as the winning entry, she will be named as the newspaper's junior reporter. Acting like an investigative reporter, she unravels the mystery. To do so she becomes involved in a fantastic adventure. Her story about it wins much more than the contest, for almost immediately after its submission it is used as a big story on the first page of the Morning Herald. All sorts of exciting things then happen involving her family, her best school friend and her new friend-the eccentric inventor of what the purple automobile really was. Suitable for ages nine to fourteen.

"Seymour Mann's stories and poetry are always inventive and unique. His background is both diverse and wide as a teacher, scholar and a practitioner in governmental affairs and labor relations. In all his writing he draws on these experiences in a way that is enriched by his fertile imagination, and certainly that is exhibited in this story. I highly recommend it, and I salute Seymour for the achievement it represents"
-Herman Taube, Author of Golden Leaves; Kyszl Kishlak/Refugee Village
